This exhibit will open your senses to the new and unexplored art of straw.
Brought to you by the Finnish artist Pirjo Vaisanen from Studio Oljikko, this exhibit explores the use of straw’s natural strengths, beauty and fragility to bring you three dimensional, geometric patterns using traditional and modern methods. Pirjo's interpretation and reinvention of this traditional material show us how it can be used for modern and original pieces of art, creating a sense of nature and space that will enrich both homes and corporate interiors. Used for centuries to make to make Christmas decorations in Finland, this humble material is now raised to another level by Studio Oljikko’s art.

For centuries straw has been used in Finland to make Himmeli, a festive geometric mobile used to decorate homes over the Christmas period. Pirjo's interpretation and reinvention of this traditional material show us how it can be used for modern and original pieces of art, creating a sense of nature and space that will enrich any contemporary interior at any time of year.

The traditional aspect of the use of straw in Finland’s history ties it to the celebrations now of 100 years of Finland’s independence held by the Finnish Embassy and the European Commission.

Pirjo keeps the joy in her work by being brave with material choices and pushes to be bold with combinations. Her inspiration often comes from nature; during walks, she may find something unusual that will lead her down a path to ultimately create a new marriage of materials and a new piece of art. You will see straw integrated with rusty metal, straw sculptures mounted on parts from recycled doors alongside images of her art mounted on acoustically absorbent peat boards from Finnish company Konto Acoustics.

The natural, the recycled and their original combinations are what Studio Oljikko’s art is all about and in addition to the use of these materials, Studio Oljikko continues on its ethical journey by creating in the near future a foundation which will support those in need from the sale of Pirjo’s work.
